We welcome you and your child to Academy of Little Learner’s preschool classroom! We look forward to spending the next year getting to know your family more. We are excited to play a part in your child’s growth and development and to be a positive influence in their lives.
We offer the children a balance of teacher directed and child-initiated activities. We understand that every child is different and has his or her own unique interests. We have a lot of fun, hands on learning activities planned for the children this year. The curriculum in our preschool class is based on facilitating the children’s learning of colors, shapes, numbers 1-20, capital and lower-case letters, social skills, emotional growth, gross and fine motor development, early science and math concepts, pre reading skills, and writing. The children will also be taking part in many sensory activities, music, cooking, and activities that promote health, safety and nutrition.
How children feel about themselves is one of our greatest responsibilities. We understand that preschool is a time of great social-emotional growth. The children will participate in activities where they have plenty of opportunities to work together building positive relationships with their peers. There will be a great deal of focus on assisting the children as they learn how to express their own feelings verbally, as well as recognizing the feelings of others.
Providing many opportunities to be self-sufficient and independent through honest recognition and sincere praise, children will gain a positive sense of self. For this reason, we will be assisting the children as they learn important life skills. The teachers will encourage the children to put their own shoes on, dress themselves for outdoor play, clean up their snack, lunch and sleep areas and put art supplies and learning tools away in the correct spots. Fostering a child’s natural tendency to be autonomous will create a feeling of internal worth that enables them to welcome challenges and work cooperatively with others.
Each child will have their own personal journal that can be used by the teachers and parents. The teachers try very hard to make sure they are writing in each child’s journal at least once a week. If there is anything that we feel you need to know about your child’s day or would enjoy reading it will be communicated to you through the journal.
We want to keep parents updated on all the exciting projects that are going on in our classroom. We have a big chalk board located on the wall at the landing of the stairs. The teachers will update the board once or twice a week to update families on activities and fun things the children are learning about throughout the week. Not only is the board a nice way for families to stay informed, but it is a great way for you to be able to talk to the children about their day at pick up time!
Weekly Class Activity & Domain Chart
Each week the teachers fill out an activity domain chart. The chart is located above the coat hooks. The domain chart is a chart that shows you how the activities that the children do during the week encourage learning skill in eight different learning domains including sensory, language & literacy, gross and fine motor, math, science, social studies, art, and music.
Each child has their own cubby and coat hook which are labeled with their names. Their bedding and extra clothes can be kept in their cubby. There are a lot of children so we ask that you please bring in small back packs so that there is enough room for all the children to hang their belongings. The cubbies are located in the back classroom. Your child will have their own cubby with their name on the front. Please remember to put your child’s nap things in their cubby on Monday morning and to take them home on Fridays to be cleaned. Each child has their own mailbox where we put any work your child did during the day, along with any other information we send to you from the school. Please check your child’s mailbox on daily basis.
Each child must have a complete set of clothes at all times in their cubby inclusive of underwear and socks! This is very important as accidents do occur, and you never know when your child may need a spare item. We also ask that each child bring in a pair of slippers that they can use as desired and if their shoes become soiled.
Lunch boxes are kept on the kitchen counter. We ask that you include an ice pack in their lunch box. The refrigerator is for snack items and is not big enough to accommodate everyone’s lunch boxes. Please pack a variety of healthy food items for your child to choose from each day. We ask that you save sugary items for special occasions only. WE DO ALLOW HEAT-UPS!
At the beginning of each month you will receive a monthly newsletter. The monthly newsletter will keep you up to date on the current happenings in our classroom, monthly themes, and curriculum and give you information about any special events that are going on our class and throughout the school. At the end of the month you will receive a classroom newsletter with all the fun things we’ve learned about. This will help you engage in discussions with your child about what they have learning and how much fun they are having during the day!
Progress reports are completed in November and May. Teacher conferences can be set up as desired or needed throughout the year.
